Sri Varalakshmi Vrata Pooja

The Varalakshmi vrata is one such occasion to celebrate the eternal presence of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity who is embodiment of beauty, not just physical, but emotional and social too. Hence every house hold celebrates the Goddess who is responsible for their overall well being.

Story behind Varalakshmi Vrata: A GAME OF DICE

Once upon a time Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were playing a game of dice. When the final dice was cast Parvati claimed “O Lord! I have won”. A dispute arose between the two regarding the validity of throw and they asked Chitranemi, a deity amongst the hordes of Shiva, to mediate. He declared with partiality that Paramashiva was the winner. Parvati became furious at this injustice and cursed him “You will turn into a leper and lose all brightness for uttering a lie”.

Paramashiva grieved at this and requested Parvati “O! Devi! This Chitranemi has never uttered a lie. Please forgive him for his first offense. Kindly, retract your curse gracefully.” Sympathising with him Parvati said “When you witness the divine damsels observing the Varalakshmi Vrata on the bank of a holy water body, this curse will stand withdrawn”.

Then Chitranemi afflicted with leprosy started living on the bank of river Tungabhadra. One day he saw a few celestial damsels engaged in the worship of the Goddess, he asked them “O! Divine Women! What is the worship that you are engaged in? Can I also perform this? I am suffering as a leper due to a curse. You must show me a way out of this grief.”

The celestial damsels replied “We are observing the ritual of Varalakshmi Vrata today. This divine in nature and is capable of yielding desired boons. After witnessing the worship performed by the divine damsels, Chitranemi was cured of his leprosy and once again acquired his golden complexion and good health.
