THE REASON WHY SRI RAM SETHU HAS BEEN NAMED AS DHANUSHKODI:

  • Request of Vibishan to Rama:
  • Vibhishan, The King of Lanka said to Lord Rama that the brave kings of India would use this Sethu bridge to attack the demons of Lanka and the demons from Lanka would attack the Humans in India. Hence, The king Vibhishan requested Lord Rama to demolish this bridge constructed from Sri Rama Dharbhasayanam (Thirupullaani) to Sri Lanka to avoid future war between Humans and Demons.
  • What Rama Did:
  • Lord Rama demolished the Sethu bridge by stroking three times with the bottom (Kodi) limbs of his bow (Dhanush). Hence, this kshetra earned its name, Dhanushkodi.

GLORY OF SETHU (DHANUSHKODI)

  • Rameshwaram is the best of the Kshetras and the best of the Theerthas is Sethu theertha.
  • Adhiseshan is great at math. He said: – I will count the sand of the earth, and the stars of the sky, but I cannot quantify the virtues (Punyas) that one will get from having holy bath in Sethu Theertha.
  • Aswathaman, Paravasu, Dharmagupta, Durasaran, etc., had taken holy bath in Sethu theertha and their dhosha was eliminated.
  • In Kruta Yuga, Moksham is attained by the Wisdom. In Thretha yuga, Moksha is attained by holy fire(Yagam). In Dhuvabara yuga and in Kali yuga, Moksha is attained by Charity (Dhaan). But in all the yugas, one can attain moksha by taking ritual bath in Sethu.
  • Even Theerthas like Ganga and Yamuna wont give the benefits that Dhanushkodi Theertha gives.

BENEFITS OF TAKING HOLY BATH IN SETHU THEERTHA

  • Whose bone is laid in Sethu after his/ her death, He /she will be released from from all their sins and attains moksha.
  • Dhosha that is caused by not performing Father’s shrardham (thithi), Mother’s shrardham (thithi), Mahalaya shrardham (thithi), etc is solved completely by Sethu theertha.
  • Aadi Amavasya is the new Moon Day that falls in the Tamil month of Aadi (July- August) . By performing holy bath in Sethu Theertha and Offering Tarpanam rituals for ancestors, offering food(Annadhaan) , clothes ( Vasthradhaan) on Aadi Amavasya Day helps their ancestors and descendants to reach heaven.
  • By Sethu theertha, One can eliminate all type of dhoshas that are caused by not performing Sandhya vandanam, Samidadhanam, Ophasanam, Agnihotram.
  • The food (pinda) offerings in Dhanushkodi, will satisfy our ancestor’s for an infinite period
  • The one who baptizes ( holy bath) once in Dhanushkodi is blessed with auspiciousness of Aswamedhayaga benefits and Thousand Ko Dhaanam benefits (Cow Dhaanam).

Auspicious Days for Sethu Snaanam

Though one can take ritual bath in Sethu any day, any time and it has no restrictions like taking ritual baths in other holy seas. Whereas there are certain auspicious days which are mentioned below.

Maha Sivarathri 11/03/2021 During Sivarathri, one should not sleep during night time and should perform pooja for Ramalinga using vilvam leaves (known as bael, bilva) Then the next morning, they should take holy bath in Sethu theertha. By doing this, one will be released from all the Sarvapapas (all Sins) and attain Lord Shiva.
Solar Eclipse 21/06/2020 During the solar and lunar eclipse, those who take ritual bath can eliminate their Brahmahathi dhosha and can attain moksha. Solar eclipse starts at 10.22 am and ends 13.42 pm.

Sethu Yatra Procedure

The Sethu pilgrimage should be done one after the other as mentioned in the below tabular column. Once you take ritual bath ( holy bath) in holy theerthas, you must definetely perform thila tharpanam. If you fail to do so, you won’t even receive the benefits by taking ritual bath in holy theerthas.

As you go on this pilgrimage, wear a kaavi dress ( saffron coloured dress), have to take food one time a day and should read the Sethu Purana and pray in the name of Lord Shiva.

6 Rameshwaram Papa Vinasa Theertham The curse of the Thitamugan to the rishis for not providing education is resolved by this theertham.
7 Paamban Bhairava Theertham Bhairav, the incarnation of Lord Parameswara, taken ritual bath in this place. Those who do ritual bath in this theertham will get longer life spin.
8 Pamban Kabi Theertham
  • The Dhosha which was caused by killing the monsters by the soldiers of Rama’s army during the battle, was eliminated by this theertha.
  • After taking ritual bath in this Theertha, Ramba was relieved from the curse of Vishwamitra.

The Same benefits that are derived by taking ritual bath in Ganga, Yamuna and Cauvery, can be derived by taking bath in this theertha.

  • The place where Lord Rama and Sita performed ritual bath.
  • Indra, performed ritual bath at the command of Brahma in this theertha and eliminated the dhosha that was caused by murdering Kabalaparan, son of rishi kasi.
10 Thangatchimadam Villurani Theertha It is the place where Lord Rama summoned the earth with his bow and brought fresh water to quench the thirst of Sita. It is believed that performing ritual bath in this theertha will fulfill all desires/ wishes.
11 Thangatchimadam Mangla Theertha
  • King Manohavasan followed the teachings of King Parasara Maharishi and took bath in this theertha regained the lost country and wealth.
  • The pious wife of a vedic scholar – Udhagamurthy was able to resurrect him from death with the holy water of this theertha. It is believed that, taking ritual bath in this theertha will ensure long life for the husband.

Lord Shiva curse Lord Brahma for his false (lying) statement. Later Brahma realises his mistake and asked Lord Shiva to give ways to relieve from the curse. Lord Shiva told Brahma to take bath in this holy Theertha to get relief from the curse. Lord Brahma relieved from the curse after taking ritual bath in this holy theertha.
